Terms of growth are used from an agricultural picture as well. (Mk 4:26-29) Seed is planted into the ground. That seed springs up and grows, first a blade, then a forming ear, and finally a fully mature ear. When the fruit is ripe then the farmer picks it. We grow in God. When we are completely mature, then we are ready for him to harvest us. Christ is the first ripe fruit, and the believers are called to be firstfruits also, ready for the Lord to pick. (1 Cor 15:23)
It does take faith to trust God for the help that we need. We are told that "he that has begun a good work in you will perform it". He will finish what he started in us.
Many other things could be said on this topic. This is a very brief, simple explanation.
